Matt McBride & Amy Woolard Nominated for Best New Poets

Smartish Pace nominated Matt McBride's poem "Cities of Advertisers" and Amy Woolard's poem "A Girl Gets Sick of a Rose" for the 2013 Best New Poets anthology. SP is proud to have several winners in the past and wish Matt & Amy the best of luck, though the good poems have been written and luck isn't exactly needed.

Parking: Park on Guilford Ave. if you can (1 block south of 1501 Guilford on bridge is often open) or on Mt. Royal Ave. or any blocks WEST of Guilford (toward Penn Station). There are also inexpensive parking lots near Penn Station (on E. Lanvale between Charles St. & St. Paul) and one next to Club Charles (1724 N. Charles St.).

Jack Gilbert Dies

Poet Jack Gilbert died Tuesday in Berkeley. He was 87 and had been in assisted care for three years due to dementia. In March, Alfred A. Knopf published Collected Poems, 432 pages encompassing everything that Mr. Gilbert wrote. It has already gone to a third printing, and all his Knopf titles remain in print.
POETRY Turns 100, Smartish Pace Commences Puberty

Poetry magazine, founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe, celebrates its centennial anniversary in October with the publication of The Open Door: 100 Poems, 100 Years of Poetry Magazine (University of Chicago Press, $20), edited by Don Share and Christian Wiman. In (un)related news Smartish Pace, founded in Baltimore by Stephen Reichert, turns 13 this month. Look out, in 2 years we'll be driving!
Jorie Graham wins Forward Prize for Poetry

Jorie Graham has won the £10,000 Forward Prize for Poetry for her collection P L A C E. She is the first female recipient of the prize since Kathleen Jamie in 2004, and the first American woman to receive the honor. Sam Riviere's 81 Austerities won the prize for best debut collection. And Denise Riley was awarded the prize for best single poem for "A Part Song." The winners were announced at a ceremony in Somerset House, London on Monday night.
Graham previously won the Pulitzer Prize for he collection The Dream of the Unified Field in 1996. Her poems have been translated into numerous languages, including Albanian, Chinese and Polish. Her Smartish Pace Poets Q&A appears here.
